Parliament votes to remove judge Baaree

Judge Abdul Baaree Yoosuf.

The parliament has voted to remove Juvenile Court judge Abdul Baaree Yoosuf from his post.

A total of 62 parliamentarians voted to remove the judge. Only one parliamentarian in attendance voted against the move. The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) investigated a case against judge Baaree and forwarded the case to the parliament on November 17.

The Judiciary Committee of the parliament then determined that the JSC made its decision in accordance with the correct procedure, and forwarded the motion to the parliament floor for a vote.

JSC investigated multiple allegations against Baaree, including the allegation that he benefited from the funds embezzled from MMPRC, the allegation that he was actively involved in a business between May 2014 and February 2018, and the allegation that he failed to disclose the information in asset declaration forms he submitted to JSC during the period.

Baaree was also on the panel of judges that sentenced current parliament speaker and JSC member, former President Mohamed Nasheed to 13 years in prison.
