EU calls for fair trial for Nasheed

The European Union (EU) has urged Maldives to ensure that former President Mohamed Nasheed is given a fair trial.

A statement by High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton said in a statement yesterday that the EU’s top diplomat "is following developments in the Maldives closely and recalls the assurances given by the Government of the Maldives as regards the personal safety of Mr. Nasheed and his right to a fair trial."

She also called upon all stakeholders to refrain from creating further tension and urged all parties to pursue political dialogue.

Ashton noted the importance of the next presidential elections in the Maldives, and stressed the need for transparent elections which allow full participation of all political parties.

A statement was also issued last night by the British Foreign Office, encouraging political parties to resume to dialogue and calling for a fair trial for Nasheed.
