President Solih creates Regional Airports Company Limited

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has created the Regional Airports Company Limited.

The President’s Office said that the company created under an executive order was created for the purpose of developing and sustaining projects of the regional airports in the nation in a business manner.

The Maldives has seen a significant increase in the number of airports. With Velana International Airport, Maldives currently has 16 airports. While Island Aviation Company runs some airports, others are run by regional airports as well as state-owned companies and private companies

The company created today, will be tasked with the management of regional airports, which the President’s Office stated was a very important task to be conducted sustainably. 

The company created under the powers granted to the President is a 100 percent state-owned company. The permitted capital for the company is MVR 10 with a share distribution of 200 million worth MVR 2 billion. The company would also act as a separate legal entity.

Out of the current airports in the nation, Regional Airports manages: 

  • H. Dh. Hanimaadhoo Airport
  • H. Dh. Kulhudhuffushi Airport
  • Sh. Funadhoo Airport
  • G. Dh. Kaadedhdhoo Airport
  • G. Dh. Maavarulu Airport
  • Fuvahmulah City Airport

Island Aviation Company manages:

  • N. Maafaru International Airport
  • R. Ifuru Airport
  • B. Dharavandhoo Airport
  • Th. Thimarafushi Airport

The airport in Dh. Kudahuvadhoo is managed by Dhaalu Airport Holdings, which is a private company, The airport in Maamigili is managed by Villa Air, which is also a private company. The airport in G.A Kooddoo is managed by Pristine Island Investment, which is also a private company. 

The airport in L. Kadhdhoo is managed by a company formed by the state named as Kadhdhoo Airport Company Limited. Gan International Airport in the south is managed by a joint-venture company named as Addu International Airport Pvt Ltd. Finally, the main international airport of the country, Velana International Airport is managed by Maldives Airports Company Limited.
