The Judicial Services Commission (JSC) announced vacancies for judgeship in three Superior Courts, the Criminal Court, the Civil Court and the Family Court. The announcement was published on Monday, following the introduction of a special panel under the commission for appointing judges and also introducing a regulation for appointing judges.
According to the JSC announcement, the Criminal Court and the Civil Court each had 2 vacancies for judgeship, while the Family Court needs 3 additional judges. The announcement has come after lengthy deliberation about shortage of judges and unmanaged backlogs at Superior Courts in Malé.
The JSC reported that discussions had been conducted between the Commission and the special panel on appointment on judges and also between the Commission and the Supreme Court of the Maldives. The Commission also reported that the number of judges to be newly taken was decided based on the workspace of court buildings and also budgetary considerations.
