2 charged for rape of woman with mental disability in Addu

The Prosecutor General’s Office announced on Sunday that it has filed charges against two men accused of raping a woman who suffers from a mental impairment in Addu City.

Makhthoom Moosa Didi, Dhafthar no. 936, K. Male’, and Ali Shimau Zubair, Zahamanzil, S. Hithadhoo, were arrested on July 31, a few hours after the rape took place.

They are accused of sexual and physical violence and forced sexual relations with the victim, a 48-year-old woman who suffers from a mental impairment.

The Prosecutor General’s Office announced on Sunday that it has filed charges against the two suspects with the S. Hithadhoo Magistrate Court.

Makhtoom and Shimau have been charged with the sexual violation of a person suffering from a disability under Article 28 (c) of Sexual Offenses Act, with reference to Article 28 (a) and (b) of the same Act.

The charge carries a sentence of 15 to 20 years in prison.

Meanwhile, one of the suspects, Shimau has also been charged with consumption of alcohol under Section 616 (b) of the Penal Code, with reference to Section 616 (a) (2) (ii).

The charge carries a minimum sentence of one month and six days in prison, and 40 lashes.
