Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has filed its first case against a company to Court to claim GST.
An official of MIRA said that MIRA filed a case against Demal Pvt Ltd for short payment of GST.
The case filed last Thursday is to claim $2,606.86, which was the outstanding amount for Demal Pvt Ltd for GST and fine as at 13 September 2012.
“This is our first case filed in relation to this. If matters can’t be resolved through discussion, we will take them to Court,” he said.
MIRA has filed over 40 cases to Court to claim due payments, most of which have ended in MIRA’s favour.
The latest list of GST non-compliers announced by MIRA contains 222 companies, of which 51 are from the tourism industry. MIRA has sent several criminal cases to Police relating to bounced cheques, and made the decision to freeze the accounts of GST non-compliers.
