MADRID (AP) — Barcelona captain Carles Puyol is out for eight weeks after dislocating his elbow during a Champions League win against Benfica.
The club said Puyol spent the night in Barcelona Hospital and was released on Wednesday.
Injured several times in recent months, Puyol returned from a more than two-week layoff on Tuesday until he fell badly in the 75th minute while trying to head the ball in the Benfica area. He was in obvious agony as he was stretchered off to a standing ovation at Lisbon's Estadio da Luz.
Not only will the defender miss the Spanish league and up to three Champions League matches, but also Spain's World Cup qualifiers this month against Belarus and France.
