The Parliamentary Group (PG) of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to participate in the first sitting of the final session of the Parliament scheduled for tomorrow, in order to encourage the implementation of the issues highlighted in the report of the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI).
Meanwhile, MDP’s National Council has advised that MDP should not participate in the Parliament until the action is taken to address the issues highlighted in the report of the CNI.
MDP’s PG held a press conference today, in which its PG Leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said that three issues highlighted in the CNI’s report must be addressed at the Parliament; namely Parliament reform, judicial reform and the activities of security forces on 6, 7 and 8 February.
He informed that meetings had been held with Speaker of Parliament Abdullah Shahid to discuss how these issues can be addressed at the Parliament.
He also informed that the CNI’s report had been sent to Parliament Committees for them to take the necessary action.
He said that MDP will prioritise addressing the concerns of the CNI report at Committee meetings, and informed that the Parliament’s Security Services (241) Committee, Independent Institutions Committee, Government Accountability Committee and National Security Committee have the authority to address the concerns highlighted in the report of the CNI.
MDP PG Vice President Ali Waheed said that he is not satisfied with the agenda of tomorrow’s Parliament sitting, because it does not include the issue of CNI.
He said that if the CNI report’s concerns cannot be addressed at the Parliament, the government will not be allowed to pass anything through the Parliament.
