The parties included in the government coalition gathered at artificial beach last night, to protest against Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) having been awarded to India’s GMR.
Not too many people participated in the protest, which commenced at 21:00.
Some senior officials of Ministries and government coalition parties called on the government to reclaim the airport from GMR.
Protesters said that the airport was leased to GMR to facilitate benefits for a certain group of people, and that they should be punished for this crime.
Organisers of the protest said that more people will gather for similar protests in the future, and stressed that last night’s gathering was just the beginning.
Last night’s demonstrators announced that if they are not successful in reclaiming the airport through peaceful protest, they will go to the airport island to regain control of it forcibly.
A box was placed to collect funds for the activities against GMR.
President of Adhaalath Party Imran Abdullah was the only leader of a political party who participated in last night’s protest.
Imran said that leaders of political parties must lead the protests against GMR, and expressed hope that this will be the case in the future.
Vice President of the Civil Society Coalition Abdullah Mohamed said that a forum will be held very soon, to provide information about the losses to the country due to the airport being operated by GMR.
