EC announces by-election for Filladhdhoo Island Council

The Elections Commission of the Maldives has set the 7th of coming January as the date for the by-election to be held to elect a new member for the vacant seat at HA. Filladhoo Island Council.

Elections said today that prospective candidates can get application forms and submit them until the 6th of coming December.

A by-election for Filladhoo has been scheduled after Council Member Adam Inaz was dismissed from his party, the Divehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and thus lost his seat. According to the Act on Decentralized Administration of the Maldives, a Counselor who wins a seat with a party ticket would lose his/her seat if he/she ditches the party.

This would be the first time an elected Counselor lost seat due to being dismissed from his/her political party.

Inaz has signed for the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) after his DRP membership was terminated.
