A building in Hithadhoo, Addu City, owned by the police has been set to fire today.
This is the second time the same building has come under similar attack.
The building was used by the police as an accommodation block before it was set on fire on the 8th of February, when enraged members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) took to streets and perpetrated acts of violence after their leader Mohamed Nasheed resigned as President of the Maldives on 7th February. The ground floor of the two-storey building was completely burnt on 8th February.
Before the property was given to the police, it was owned by the Audit Office.
The police say that the building was set on fire today around 6:15 pm. According to police, no one was harmed in the fire. Since the ground floor was burnt on 8th February, the first floor has been used as a store, said the police.
Details of the extent of damage caused by today’s fire have not yet been reported.
“It is not used for living anymore, and there is no electricity. We strongly suspect that this is a deliberate act. Firemen are attending the building as of now and trying to extinguish the fire”, a police official said.
The police have already begun an investigation of the matter.
