PPM to propose to government to reclaim airport

The Council of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) have decided last night, to propose to the government to reclaim the airport from current operator GMR.

PPM Council Member Ahmed Saleem said today that this decision was made unanimously by the members present at the Council meeting held last night.

“The President sent a letter to PPM, requesting for our view on this matter. So our Council decided last night that the airport should be reclaimed from GMR,” he said.

He said that PPM also advised the government to share the investigation reports and information on losses to the people of Maldives due to this agreement, with the Indian government.

The President said in a letter sent to political parties this week, that the government incurs more losses than it receives income as a result of this agreement, and that it would not be possible for the government to sustain this agreement.

Nonetheless, factors such as the heavy compensation and legal consequences must be considered before the decision can be made to annul the agreement.

Government coalition parties have decided to cooperate in a movement Maldivians’ Airport to Maldivians, to reclaim the airport from GMR.
