Maldives Customs Service has said that it has seized drugs worth MVR5.2 million so far this year.
Customs Officer Hussain Shaz said today that 2098.0424g drugs with a street value of about MVR2.2 million have been caught on seven different occasions.
In addition, Maldives Customs has seized 3502.3599g drugs with a street value of MVR3.02 million in collaboration with the Police.
Out of the drugs caught by Maldives Customs this year, 1680.0559g is heroine, 13.5951g is cannabis and 19.3914g is opiates.
He said that checks are being conducted on vessels to prevent the import of drugs to Maldives, and more operations are planned for the future.
Maldives Customs caught 8.9kg and 6.3kg of drugs in 2010 and 2011 respectively.
