Police have been exemplary in maintaining order: President

President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that the Police have acted as capable, exemplary figures in maintaining order over the past months.

The President made this statement at the inauguration ceremony of Institute for Security and Law Enforcement, established by Maldives Police Service for the provision of higher education courses.

The President noted that, with the recent changes gone through by the country and the level of freedom assumed by individuals in Maldives, protecting people’s rights has not been an easy task.

“In an environment like this, it is difficult to protect people’s rights and maintain order for everyone. But our Police Service has been exemplary in achieving this,” he said.

He expressed his gratitude to the Police for their remarkable services when the unrest was most intense, and commended them for managing the situation without disrupting pedestrians, tourist travels, airport operations or business activities.

The President also launched the website for the Institute for Security and Law Enforcement.

He said that the establishment of such an institution within the Police Force would benefit everyone.

“To be able to obtain education in security studies and law enforcement without leaving the country, is a great development for us,” he said.

The President noted the lack of a building to run the courses, and said that the institution will have a campus and experts in the future, and that the government will provide assistance in this regard.

He said that in addition to running education programs, the institution will also act as a centre for providing legal advice.

He expressed hope that research on internal issues will also be conducted at the institution.

Speaking at the ceremony, Commissioner of Police Abdullah Riyaz said that the institution will facilitate high education for everyone, and informed that its first course will be conducted next year.

He said that efforts will be made to make the institution reputable in this region, and expressed hope that students from all over the region will enrol at the institution to complete their studies.
