Aim is to have 35,000 members before Congress: Yameen

Progressive Party of Maldives’ (PPM) Parliamentary Group Leader Abdullah Yameen has said that the party’s aim is to have 35,000 members before its Congress is held in November 2012.

Speaking to media today after visiting Haa Alif and Haa Dhaal Atolls with PPM, Yameen expressed confidence that the party will have 35,000 members by November.

“Elections Commission has accepted 17,000 members. They are trying to verify forms of about 8,000 additional members. This trip has resulted in about 2,500 additional members. Our aim is to reach 35,000,” he explained.

Yameen said that the visit to Haa Alif and Haa Dhaal Atolls have been greatly successful, during which PPM Haruges (main halls) were opened in several islands.

He said that many islanders said that they believe that the current ruling party is PPM, and complained about some institutions being headed by people who belong to MDP.

According to Yameen, people of some islands were concerned that the current leaders of Health Corporations, for example, are MDP members who have now joined one of the coalition parties.

Yameen said that these complaints will be communicated to the government.

PPM has informed that at the end of this trip, 2,000 people had joined the party from Haa Alif Atoll and about 500 people had joined from Hdh. Kulhudhuffushi and Hdh. Kurin’bee.

PPM delegations will also visit Raa, Gaaf Alif and Gaaf Dhaal Atolls this month.
