India contributes greatly to human resource development in Maldives: Indian High Commission

Indian High Commission in Maldives has said that India is prepared to assist the Maldives in the development of its human resource and health sectors.

The Indian High Commission made this statement in a press statement released today.

The press statement includes statistics of India’s contributions to Maldives’ human resource sector.

“The Government of India offers 193 scholarships and training courses every year to Maldivian nationals who wish to pursue their studies in India under various schemes viz. ITEC Programme; TCS Colombo Plan; ICCR scholarship - General Cultural Scholarship Scheme, Cultural Exchange Programme, Commonwealth Scholarship/Fellowship Plan, Aid to Maldives, SAARC Scholarship Scheme; South Asian University Post-Graduate scholarships, MBBS, PG in Medicine,” says the statement.

The statement also highlights that during the past 3 years, more than 575 Maldivians benefitted under various scholarship schemes of the government of India; and that under the $5.3 million Technology Adoption Project funded by the government of India launched on 15 June 2011, a total of 2,195 Maldivians completed the course and have been certified, which includes 1090 Teacher certifications, 503 Youth certifications in IT and 602 certifications in ICT related vocational courses.

“Under the Technical Cooperation Scheme (TCS) of the Colombo Plan 10 scholarships are offered for under-graduate, post-graduate and research towards a Ph.D. degree. At the under-graduate level a few scholarships are also available for engineering degrees or diploma courses,” says the statement.

This statement by the Indian High Commission comes at a time when issues related to the government’s agreement with Indian Company GMR have heated up, and also when President Waheed just returned from an official visit to India’s biggest Asian competitor, China.
