Terror suspect Ameen remanded in custody for 15 days

October 25, 2019: Mohamed Ameen arrested under the suspicion of terrorist activities has been remanded in custody for 15 days.

Mohamed Ameen arrested under the suspicion of terrorist activities has been remanded in custody for 15 days by the Criminal Court.

Ameen who was included in a list of terrorists by the US Department of Treasury of Foreign Assets (OFAC) was arrested on Wednesday. Ameen was arrested for recruiting others to travel for war in other countries and of spreading extremist ideology in the country. Police have not yet confirmed if the suspect arrested on Wednesday was Ameen, but “Sun” has found out that the suspect is indeed Ameen.

Ameen was also a suspect in the 2007 Sultan Park bombing and had an Interpol red notice issued for him after he escaped to Sri Lanka after being suspected in the case. Ameen was arrested in Sri Lanka and brought to the Maldives before being released after two weeks.

OFAC had stated that Ameen has been assisting with finance, goods, and technology to a terrorist group based in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Ameen had also worked on recruiting members for Islamic State and also conducted around 10 recruitment sessions in Male’ city in April.
