Independent candidate wins Nellaidhoo Council by-election

Independent candidate Farooq Adam has today won the by-election conducted to elect a new Councilor for H.Dh. Nellaidhoo Island Council.

Elections Commission of the Maldives published the temporary results of today’s by-election according to which Farooq won the ballot with 198 votes, which constitutes 45.73 per cent of total voters.

Today’s by-election was contested by two party-nominated candidates in addition to Farooq; one by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and one by the Jumhoory Party (JP). While JP candidate won 162 votes, MDP candidate could gather only 73 votes.

Elections Commission said that 456 people, out of an eligible voting population of 779 voted, and that 23 votes were counted null.

Elections Commission also said that there has been no complaints concerning the elections so far.

R. Atoll Council by-election and M. Raimmandhoo Island Council by-election are set to take place next Saturday as a seat in each of these Councils is also currently vacant.
