Test flight successfully landed at Kooddou Airport

A test flight has successfully landed at the newly developed Airport at Kooddou, G.A. Atoll in the South of the country.

The new Airport was developed by a Singaporean company in the uninhabited island in which is located the largest privately-owned industrial fisheries company of the country.

The test flight to Kooddou Airport took off from Ibrahim Nasir International Airport at Hulhulé today at 11 a.m., and it landed at Kooddou at 11:50. Dr. Ahmed Shamheed, the Minister of Transport, was in the flight. With him was Mohamed Ali Janaah, CEO of KHA Resorts, which conducted construction work at the new Airport.

Upon landing at Kooddou, the Transport Minister spoke to reporters, saying that he was delighted to see the first flight successfully operated to Kooddou Airport. He also said that the day was “special for the people of G.A.”. The Minister also happens to come from the same atoll.

Janaah told reporters that the new Airport developed by Bonavista from Singapore would be handed over to the Maldivian government on Monday the next week. He also said that routine flights to the Airport would start on the same day.

“I use this opportunity to express my gratitude towards all those who helped us build this Airport. We still have some petty tasks to complete, and they all will be done within the next two or three weeks”, said Janaah.

The Captain of the first test flight to Kooddou said that the new Airport is the same as other Airports in the nation and that the place is “well ready for operations”.

Many people from nearby inhabited islands visited Kooddou today to witness the historic landing of the first flight there. There was a ferry from Vilingili, the capital of G.A. Atoll, to Kooddou from 8:00 a.m. this morning to carry those who wished to go to Kooddou. When the test flight landed, people expressed their delight with events of traditional sports and dance items, and those who arrived in the flight were warmly welcomed.

The new Airport would be officially opened by President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik on Monday the next week.
