Case on damage caused to Parliament equipment by MPs submitted to Police

Council Member of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Ahmed Saleem has submitted a case to the Police, requesting for the investigation of the actions of Parliament Members (MPs) when they caused damage to the furniture and equipment at the Parliament on the day the President was scheduled to deliver the Presidential Address.

Saleem’s lawyer, Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim said that the case, based on the incidents of 19 March, was submitted to the Police yesterday.

“We requested the Police to investigate these criminal activities, because they have not been probed so far,” Waheed said.

He said that it is some people’s belief that the Speaker of Parliament, Abdullah Shahid did not forward this complaint to the Police to protect the interests of some groups; however, crimes have to be investigated when laws made to protect the interests of the general public, are violated.

He said that he did not submit the case to Parliament because the crimes were committed by Parliament Members, thereby resulting in conflict of interest; and because the Parliament had not taken any action against those crimes.

Saleem also informed that the Prosecutor General had been requested to watch over this investigation by the Police.
