MDP wants to break up the government: PPM

Vice President of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Abdul Raheem Abdullah has said that Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) purpose behind its request to join the current government, is to break up the government.

Abdul Raheem, while speaking to reporters at the PPM Office today, said that MDP’s intentions are questionable as they had earlier rejected the President’s invitations for them to join the government.

He added that this shows MDP’s lack of sincerity.

“The current government has been accepted by the international community. There are no grounds for questioning the legitimacy of the government. They know now, that their protests on the streets or at Usfasgandu will not be successful in any way. They know that they have nothing left to offer to the people of Maldives. I think their purpose is to break up the government,” he said.

Abdul Raheem informed that PPM will hold a Council meeting tonight to discuss its stand on accommodating MDP’s request.

He expressed hope that the President will hold discussions with members of the current coalition government, prior to making the decision on whether to include MDP in the government.

MDP Chairperson Reeko Moosa Manik proposed yesterday that MDP be allowed to join the government.

According to Moosa Manik, because MDP was in power when the government changed, CNI’s decision that the current government is legitimate should mean that it should presently be MDP’s rule in the Maldives.
