Deputy CEO of BML accused of misinforming parliament

The deputy CEO of Bank of Maldives, Mr. Mohamed Shareef has been accused of providing false information to the Public Accounts Committee of the parliament by the speaker of the parliament, former president Mohamed Nasheed, who has asked the police to investigate this matter.

The secretary-general of the Parliament, Ms. Fathimath Niusha stated in a news conference on Sunday that the chair member of the committee had informed the speaker of the parliament that Mr. Shareef had provided false information to the committee during the committee meeting held on July 16, 2019.

“The chair member of the Public Accounts of Committee of the Parliament had informed the speaker of the Parliament that the deputy CEO of BML, Mr. Mohamed Shareef had provided the committee with false information, so we are preparing to request the relevant authorities to investigate this matter.” Ms. Niusha stated during the news conference.

She did not however, elaborate on what the deputy CEO of BML had provided as false information to the committee. The speaker of the parliament has previously stated that investigations will be carried out and that there will be action taken against those who are suspected of misinforming parliament committees.
