The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has said that former President Mohamed Nasheed made the decision to accept the report of the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) following pressure from the Commonwealth, UN, and some influential countries such as the US and India.
PPM Council Member Ahmed Mahloof made this statement at a press conference held at the PPM Office this afternoon.
Mahloof said that Nasheed has failed in the political arena, and that he can no longer act as the leader of a political party, or return to power by force.
Mahloof noted that President Dr Waheed’s government did not come to power through a coup.
“There is one thing that Nasheed accepted that makes me happy, which is his acceptance that this is not a ‘coup government’. He said clearly today that it cannot be said that the current government is a ‘coup government’. He also said that action should be taken against the illegal activities carried out by him. This is welcomed by PPM,” Mahloof said.
He also said that the CNI’s report shows that the accusations made by Nasheed against Commissioner of Police Abdullah Riyaz, Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim and Minister of State for Home Affairs Mohamed Fayaz, are false.
Mahloof said that PPM will fully support the investigations which follow the CNI’s report.
