As we approach the release of the report of the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI), the government coalition parties have said that they will accept the report regardless of CNI’s findings in the report.
A meeting was held today between the President, Vice President and the leaders of PPM, Jumhooree Party, Adhaalath Party, Qaumee Party and PA, to discuss the report.
The CNI will present its report before 10:00 tomorrow.
Jumhooree Party Leader Gasim Ibrahim said that he will accept the report, and that he believes that the CNI’s decisions will be just. He also requested the President to take prior action, in anticipation of the break out of violence tomorrow.
PPM member and Fonadhoo MP Abdullah Abdul Raheem said that the CNI is a Commission which has been recognized by the world, and that PPM is prepared to accept CNI’s findings. He expressed confidence that CNI will not state in its report that a coup was conducted, as there was no coup in the Maldives.
“Our Constitution states that in the event that the post of the President becomes vacant, the Vice President will assume the post of President. That’s what happened. I have no doubt that the report won’t state that there was a coup,” he said.
Adhaalath Party President Imran Abdullah said that all the parties which were present at today’s meeting were in consensus about accepting the report, and that he hoped that CNI’s report would be similar to the recent report published by HRCM.
“The two investigations were conducted on about the same thing, so it would be impossible for CNI’s report to be different from HRCM’s,” Imran said.
He also assured the President that the coalition parties will support the government even after the report.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed’s representative to the CNI, Gaha Ahmed Saeed has expressed dissatisfaction over CNI’s draft report.
Following this, MDP has stated that it will not accept CNI’s findings.
Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, Ahmed Nazim who also joined today’s meeting, said that tomorrow is a historical day in the Maldives, and compared the release of the report to the release of results after a sports event.
“Everyone has to accept the results. We all agreed to this. Just like in a football match, it’s not possible to change the rules halfway into the game,” Nazim said.
The ceremony to release the report will be held tomorrow morning at the President’s Office, in the presence of the members of CNI and reporters.
The Police and MNDF are on alert for any violence that may break out in the Maldives following the release of the report.
