The Maldives will think further about the proposals made by the Sri Lankan government on joint-promotion of tourism, said Ahmed Adeeb, the Maldivian Minister of Tourism.
Speaking to Sun Online whilst at Lanka, Minister Adeeb said today that discussions are already under way regarding the Lankan proposal under which the two nations will conduct tourism promotion together. He said that a final understanding and agreement would be reached after the discussions.
“Lanka is interested in joining hands with the Maldives to promote tourism. We have discussed about it, however, before reaching a final position, we will consider the terms and then only will we be able to agree”, said the Minister.
Minister Adeeb said that as Lanka is a fast-developing tourism market, Maldives would benefit from a joint-promotion program.
“There have been other cases where nations join together to promote tourism, and such cooperation has yielded benefits for both parties in many cases. Lanka and the Maldives are two markets very close, and when we are trying to expand our market, we can benefit from having a partner”, said the Minister.
According to reports, a trade agreement to be signed between the Maldives and Sri Lanka is been kept on hold for an additional term on tourism sector to be added after further considerations. The agreement was to be signed during President Dr. Waheed’s recent tour to Lanka.
The President said today that the Maldives is set to sign some three agreements with Lanka in a near future.
