President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that the government will hold discussions on the action to be taken after the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI), created to probe the downfall of the government on 7 February 2012, presents its report on 30 August.
The President said during his meeting with foreign diplomats in Sri Lanka as part of his current visit to Sri Lanka, that leaders of political parties will be invited to this meeting within the next 48 hours.
Responding to a question by a diplomat, the President said that the discussions will be chaired by the party-talks moderator Ahmed Mujtaba.
“My hope is that this will help us decide on the action to be taken until the Presidential Elections next year,” the President said.
President Dr Waheed said that he would respect the CNI’s findings, and expressed hope that all leading politicians would do the same.
He said that he would participate in the upcoming political peace talks, but noted that former President Nasheed has refused to participate in the talks with some leaders.
The President said that CNI’s Co-chair G.P. Selvam, who wrote most of the report, will return to the Maldives in about two days to finalise the report and present it to the relevant authorities on 29 August.
He went on to say that he had been informed that further efforts to resume the Parliament will take place next week.
The President said that the political tension in the Maldives had subsided to some extent, and urged the international community to cooperate with the Maldivian government.
Two diplomats posed questions to the President when the floor was opened to questions.
