The Maldives Journalist Association (MJA) has expressed concern over efforts to obstruct media, and the recent trend in Maldives whereby politicians refuse to provide information to media operators other than the ones with which they are affiliated.
A statement issued by MJA notes that complaints had been received by the Association, in relation to statements by the Police and President’s Office that they would not cooperate with Raajje TV, which was followed by former President Nasheed providing an interview only to Raajje TV at the airport on the night he returned from a trip abroad.
MJA said that this will not be tolerated, and urged government institutions and political parties to be unbiased, and advised against discriminating between media operators.
MJA stressed that it should be accepted that the ‘stands’ taken by all media operators will not be the same especially in a political environment, and that the practice of boycotting media operators should not exist in a civilised society.
MJA reminded viewers and politicians to make use of the two institutions established to supervise media operators, if they are doubtful of content relayed by the media.
MJA also urged media operators to act responsibly, and to share only honest and truthful information.
