The no confidence motion against Male' city Mayor Sarangu Adam Manik has been withdrawn by the City Councilor Mohamed Falaah, who reportedly submitted the motion claiming Adam Manik was unfit for the job.
The reasons for the sudden withdrawal of the motion scheduled for Monday's councilors meeting, remains unclear, as Falaah was unavailable to comment at the time of press.
Adam Manik and Falah who lost Mayor's position to him, are from ruling party, MDP which holds 9 out of 11 seats in city council.
According to Deputy Mayor Ahmed Samaah Rasheed, the motion was withdrawn by Falaah during the finalization of meeting's agenda.
"During the time of passing the agenda, he withdrew the motion. Did not specify the reason. The problem is over" Deputy Mayor said.
However, Councilor Ibrahim Shujau who is one among the two representatives of opposition DRP in the council claimed the case was withdrawn by Falaah due to the absence of another MDP councilor, Maizan Ali Manik who is likely to be nominated for Mayor's position once Adam Manik is ousted.
According to Shujau who also supports the no confidence motion, a decision will be made on resubmitting the motion when Maizan Ali Manik returns from his official trip to Japan on July 12.
Shujau also said that the motion against Adam Manik has been initiated by councilors from his own party because he has failed to deliver quality work and run the council effectively.
"Due to increasing concerns the issue went this far. We just want a solution for this," Shujau said.
Although a couple of councilors support the motion, some are however against it.
MDP Councilor, Mr. Mohamed Abdul Kareem said that he was very disappointed at this motion, and that he was concerned over MDP councilors’ “ill-treatment” of party members. He also called upon the councilors behind the vote of no confidence, to stop blaming the Mayor and take responsibilities themselves.
And another councilor who wish to remain anonymous, said the motion is due to fail as the majority councilors still support Adam Manik.
