The Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has expressed concern over the spread of information through official as well as social media, in relation to its report on the events of 6 and 7 February 2012.
HRCM had shared its report with the relevant authorities, but not with any media operator or political party.
Information on the report was first relayed to media by Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), followed by Jumhooree Party (JP).
President of HRCM Mariyam Azra said that the Commission will have to check whether the report in circulation is the same as the one issued by HRCM.
Azra said that HRCM will request to refrain from spreading such information in relation to its report.
PPM has shared part of the report, which has HRCM’s stamp on it, with media. The report states that former President Mohamed Nasheed ordered senior officers of MNDF to remove the Police and MNDF personnel from the protest area at Artificial Beach on the night of 6 February; and that this order was in conflict with article 238 of the Constitution.
The 57-page report also states that after investigation, there was no evidence to prove Nasheed’s allegation of plans to assassinate him while he was at MNDF Headquarters on 7 February.
After PPM had shared this information, JP held a press conference today during which they said that HRCM’s report will silence those who believe that the government was changed through a coup, and that HRCM should have issued this report long ago.
