Will go to Court, if CNI

Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has said that a case will be filed to Supreme Court, if any phrase in the report of the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) so much as implies that the current government came to power through a coup.

PPM Interim Vice President Umar Naseer made this statement at a press conference held at PPM Office today.

“We will file a case to Supreme Court if CNI’s decision in its report is unclear, or if it implies that there was a coup, or if it implies that the events which took place on 7 February were illegal,” Umar said.

Umar said that only the Supreme Court has the authority to issue the final verdict on the events of 7 February.

“CNI’s decision will not be deemed an official verdict. It will only be the Commission’s view or opinion, so we can’t depend on that for an issue related to a country’s government. The only body which has the legal authority to deliver a verdict on issues such as this, is the Supreme Court,” Umar said.

In response to MDP’s statement that power should be returned to MDP if CNI decides that power was transferred as a result of illegal events, Umar said that this statement shows that MDP members are not informed of the contents of the Constitution, as this statement is in conflict with the Constitution.

Umar said that MDP will not succeed in its efforts to prove that a coup was conducted on 7 February, as the events took place before the eyes of Maldivians.

He also expressed full confidence that the CNI’s report will not state that there was a coup.
