Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture has said that action will be taken against those who involve foreign nationals in fishing in Maldives.
A statement released by the Ministry yesterday states that complaints are being received in relation to foreign nationals’ involvement in fishing in the economic zone of Maldives, through being employed as crew on fishing vessels and other ways.
The Ministry emphasised that it is illegal to involve foreign national in fishing in Maldives, and said that action will be taken against those who violate this law.
Article 14 of the Fisheries Act of Maldives defines the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Maldives as the area of the sea extending to a distance of 75 miles from the outer reef of the atolls.
Article 15 states that fishing in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Maldives by foreigners, or Maldivians jointly with foreigners, is illegal.
