Fathimath Niusha, who had been serving as Deputy Secretary-General of People’s Majlis has been appointed the Majlis’s new Secretary-General.
The 33 lawmakers who attended this Monday’s Majlis sitting unanimously voted in support of appointing Niusha to the position.
The two candidates applied to the position of Secretary-General of the Majlis when the application was first opened, only Niusha applied to the position when application was re-opened for a second time on June 12.
Niusha had been working as Deputy Secretary-General of the Majlis since 2012, having spent the four years prior to that serving as the Majlis’ Legal Counsel.
The position of Secretary-General of the Majlis has been vacant since the resignation of former Secretary-General Ahmed Mohamed in February, 2018.
The basic salary of a Secretary-General of the Majlis is MVR 35,000. He/she will also receive a living allowance of MVR 15,000 and a phone allowance of MVR 5,000.
Conditions for a Secretary-General include higher education in law and minimum age of 25 years.
The Secretary-General is responsible for arranging Majlis sittings, maintaining paperwork, managing administrative work and assisting the Speaker of the Majlis, the Deputy Speaker of the Majlis and other lawmakers.
