The second phase of the Gulhifalhu reclamation project, under which 15-20 hectares of land will be reclaimed, has commenced this morning.
The company responsible for the project, Global Projects Development Company (GPD), said that the regions on Thilafushi-Gulhifalhu side and the Gulhifalhu-Male’ side will be reclaimed under this phase.
He also said that the phase will be completed in about one week.
Similar to the previous phase, the Netherlands’ vessel ‘Queen of the Netherlands’, which is the second largest such vessel in the world, will be used for reclamation in this phase as well.
The government has handed over the 11 hectares of land reclaimed under the previous phase, to Gulhifalhu Corporation.
The Gulhifalhu project started in 2010, when reclamation and development of Gulhifalhu was leased to a UK company for 35 years, by government company Gulhifalhu Industrial Zone Limited.
