Parliament backs Sulaiman's nomination as member of NIC

People’s Majlis has provided its backing to President’s nominee for member of National Integrity Commission (NIC), the former President of Elections Commission, Ahmed Sulaiman.

The Committee of Independent Institutions of the Majlis completed its deliberations and gave their approval to Sulaiman on Monday. Only those who earn over 75 percent marks based on education, training, experience and capability are provided their backing for NIC membership. Sulaiman received 75.89 percent marks.

The nomination was put to vote at the Majlis sitting this Wednesday, which was boycotted by opposition lawmakers.

31 lawmakers voted in favor of the nomination.

The NIC has the authority to investigate criminal allegations against police officers, immigration officers, Maldives Correctional Service officers and Customs officers.

The Majlis also provided its backing to President’s nominee for Maldivian Ambassador to Japan, Ibrahim Uwaish during Wednesday’s sitting.

32 pro-government lawmakers voted in favor of Uwaish.
