Former Commander of the Police SWAT team has been arrested

The former Commander of the Special Weapons And Tactics under the Special Operation of the Maldives Police Service, Hussain Saif, has been arrested.

Police Spokesperson, Superintendent Ahmed Shifan said that two police officers have been arrested in relation to an ongoing investigation.

The police did not give any information on the officers or the case they are connected to.

However, Sun Media has confirmed that one of the police officers in custody as the former head of SWAT. Some journalists have witnessed Saif being taken in to a police vehicle.

He was arrested at his residence at Henveiru Kimgimaage after a search of the residence by the police. Although placed in custody, he is still a police officer working in the Support and Logistics Department.

Sources say that he was arrested in connection to the attempt to overthrow the government..

Sun Media has learned that Saif was part of the team established to execute the Supreme Court Ruling passed on 1 February. Heated words were exchanged between him and the SO officer during the protest rallies that followed the ruling.
