The political unrest in Maldives is a domestic affair of the country, and the government of China is against any international intervention in the domestic affairs of Maldives, says the Chinese foreign ministry.
Speaking at a press briefing, the spokesperson at China’s foreign ministry, Geng Shuang said China was keeping a close eye on the situation in Maldives.
He said the government of China was confident the Maldivian government and Maldivian political parties had the wisdom and capability to deal with the current political crisis on their own.
"We hope relevant parties can properly resolve the differences through dialogue and consultation and restore normal order as soon as possible and maintain national and social stability," said Geng.
Meanwhile, the Global Times, run by Chinese Communist Party, criticized international intervention in the political crisis in Maldives in an editorial.
The editorial was especially critical of India, saying it had no justification to intervene in the political crisis in Maldives.
"India has a strong desire to control South Asian countries. It regards the region as its backyard. New Delhi is particularly sensitive to any endeavor by small South Asian states toward independence and autonomy, especially ties with other major powers. New Delhi takes it for granted that it can openly intervene in their domestic affairs,” read the editorial.
It urged India to respect the Maldives’ sovereignty and independence.
