President of Elections Commission resigns

President of Elections Commission (EC), Ahmed Sulaiman has resigned from his post.

“Sun” has been informed Sulaiman handed in his resignation this Wednesday.

Sulaiman resigned from both his post as President of EC, and as a member of EC.

The reason for his resignation is unclear at this point.

Sulaiman’s resignation comes amid concern by the opposition over the delay in by-election for the 12 constituencies previously represented by now deposed MPs. IT has been more than 60 days after EC declared the 12 MPs have been deposed.

The 12 deposed MPs have filed a motion with Supreme Court, claiming EC does not have the authority to depose them.
