Maumoon: The opposition is the current government, not us

The opposition is the current government and “not us”, says former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Speaking at the function held by allied opposition parties at M. Kunooz last Wednesday night, Maumoon said the parties were with the people of the country, and it therefore made the current government the opposition.

He added that the government was desperately trying to disguise the fact that they were deeply troubled by the success of the opposition’s work.

“The work of us allied parties have met with great success. We are making great progress. The government is now learning its level. The inefficient and unjust actions of the government are coming to light,” said Maumoon.

He also said the claims by the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives that the opposition was in disarray over selecting a presidential candidate was an attempt to mislead the public.

Maumoon has recently stated that the opposition has not yet discussed former President Mohamed Nasheed’s suggestion that the opposition select a presidential candidate for the 2018 election who will act as a transitional leader.

He said the opposition will only compete in the presidential election if the independence and fairness of the election was guaranteed.
