Wednesday’s appeal hearing over the Criminal Court order to keep Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon jailed pending the outcome of his bribery trial has been postponed at the request of Faris’ attorneys.
The appeal hearing, scheduled for 9:15 am this Thursday at the High Court was postponed at the request of Faris’ attorneys as they had not been able to meet Faris.
Appeal hearings over Faris’ detention had been ongoing at High Court when Faris’ attorneys filed a motion with Supreme Court after changes to the High Court bench overseeing the case. Supreme Court had backed the change brought to the bench, ruling the change was regulatory.
Meanwhile, the preliminary hearing held at Criminal Court last Tuesday in the bribery case against Faris was cancelled at the request of Faris’ attorneys after the State prosecution submitted a new piece of evidence.
They requested additional time to discuss the new piece of evidence.
Faris is accused of offering a bribe to a fellow parliamentarian. The State prosecution has submitted the parliamentarian Faris is accused of offering the bribe to as an anonymous witness in the case.
