Family: Counting 1,000 days since Nazim’s imprisonment with deep sadness

1,000 days since the imprisonment of former Minister of Defense Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim is being counted with wounded hearts and heartfelt prayer, says Nazim’s family in a press statement.

The family said in the press statement released last Sunday that it did not wish for any Maldivian to be barred from the right to justice. The family said they wished all Maldivians dedicate themselves to fighting for freedom and rights.

They said in the press statement that Nazim was sentenced to 11 years in prison with no evidence to prove the pistol found in Nazim’s residence was kept there by him. The family also noted the letter sent by former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor to the Chief Justice on June 20, 2017, in which he said the pistol and bullets were not Nazim’s, and claimed he was privy to what actually happened.

The family noted that Adeeb, in the letter, had stressed that he could prove to the courts beyond doubt that Nazim had no knowledge of the pistol and bullets.

Nazim requested the Supreme Court to revisit his case after Adeeb sent him letter, to which the court has made no response to date, said the family. The family said it was ashamed of the country’s judiciary.

The family said every second that passed with Nazim being denied his right to proper medical treatment was abuse to the family and the entire people of Maldives by the judiciary.

They were deeply saddened and disappointed in the judiciary, said the family.
