RaajjeTV pays MVR 500,000 fine

Private television station, RaajjeTV has paid the MVR 500,000 fine imposed on it by Maldives Broadcasting Commission for comments made by Thimarafushi MP Mohamed Mustafa during one of its shows.

The comments made by MP Mustafa on July 28 have been deemed a threat to national security. He had called out for the people to take to the streets and overthrow President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration.

CEO of RaajjeTV, Hussain Fiyaz Moosa said the fine imposed on the station was unfair. He said the station planned on filing a lawsuit to get back the MVR 500,000 it paid as fine this Sunday.

The station had collected the money it needed to pay the fine by opening a fund box named “Aburufulhu Fund”. Fiyaz thanked the people who contributed to the fund.

Mustafa is currently under investigation by the police for his comments, which is being treated as incitement to commit illegal acts to overthrow the legitimate government of the country.
