Police officer charged in new assassination plot against President

A police officer has been charged in a new assassination plot against President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

“Sun” has been informed the police officer suspected of the new assassination plot against Yameen has been pressed with terrorism charges. His trial is yet to begin.

Details of the new assassination plot are not available at this time.

The first known assassination plot against Yameen was the improvised explosive device which was detonated onboard the speedboat he and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim were travelling in, on September 28, 2015.

The Vice President and Minister of Tourism, Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor, along with two military officers were convicted of the crime, and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Adeeb, along with a number of other suspects have also been charged in a second assassination plot against Yameen, involving a Sri Lankan sniper.

Minister of Defense, Adam Shareef Umar has stated attempts on Yameen’s life were made three times.
