Hearings in the appeal case filed by the Leader of the Jumhooree Party, Qasim Ibrahim, after the extension on his medical treatment abroad was denied by the Maldives Correctional Service, has begun at the Civil Court.
The trial began today after the attempts to settle the matter outside the court failed.
The hearing today had the debate on the temporary order. Qasim was allowed to go abroad for medical treatment on 6 September 2017.
Qasim was sentenced to three years, two months and 12 days for bribery, in absentia, while at the hospital on August 24. His sentence was later amended and he was granted permission to serve his sentence under house arrest.
He was allowed to travel out of the country 13 days after he was admitted to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital.
