Leader of the Jumhooree Party, Qasim Ibrahim has filed a suit against the Maldives Correctional Service after they refused the extension on his medical visit to Singapore.
Qasim's lawyers has confrimed that they filed the suit at the Civil Court. A statement issued by the lawyers said that doctors have said that Qasim is not fit for travel and the Correctional Service has been informed that the doctors have said so.
And raised concerns that the Correctional Service still denied the extension request.
The statement from the lawyers said that the Correctional Service cannot decide on the status of an ill person as a clerical decision. And the decisions on medical treatment planning are techinical decisions made by doctors.
Lawyers said that the suit was filed because the Correctional Service acted in violation of their legal obligations and the expert doctors.
In an effort to obey the decision by the Correctional Service, Qasim booked the ticket to return to the Maldives, according to the statement from his lawyers, but the airline refused to fly him since he is unfit to travel.
Qasim was initially given a ten days for his medical treatment abroad and it was later extended by another ten days upon the request from his family.
