Maldives Ports Limited has been contracted today to provide a bus transportation service in Malé City, Haa Dhaalu atoll Kulhudhuffushi and the linked islands of Laamu atoll.
At a ceremony held at the MPL this afternoon, the agreement was signed by the Economic Minister, Mohamed Saeed, and the CEO of MPL, Ibrahim Abdulrazzaq Haleem.
Speaking at the ceremony, Haleem said that while the road development project is underway in Kulhudhuffushi, the Laamu atoll link road project has been completed. And as the infrastructures progress, the company intends to provide affordable public transport in those islands.
The MPL CEO said that the bu service will be starting in Laamu atoll within a month and they are working to start the service in a month in Kulhudhuffushi as well. Haleem said they the service will be starting in Malé City soon.
MPL is currently providing public bus serivce in Addu City and Fuvahmulah City. Haleem said that the MPL is thinking about grow the service further in those two cities.
Economic Minister, Saeed, said that President Yameen has big ideas to develop the transportation system.
The MDP government has previously started the bus service in Malé City and Addu City with MVK company. But the service was later terminated by the company. The bus operation was later contracted to MIFCO as well.
