Case presented to Supreme Court to stop parliament by-elections

A case has been taken to the Supreme Court in an effort to stop the parliament by-elections in six constituencies.

The case was filed by the opposition coalition of the former President, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, MDP, Adhaalath Party and Jumhooree Party.

The case says that the Election Commission has decided to hold by-elections in some parliament constituencies that would violate the basic rights granted by the Constitution in reference to the Supreme Court rulings on 13 July 2017 and 16 July 2017.
