Largest opposition party MDP has said that they would be making a decision on joining the government's invitation to official talks without any conditions, after discussing it with the opposition parties in the united movement.
MDP made the decision last night at an emergency meeting of the MDP council held last night.
All the members who talked at the meeting last night spoke against the official talks with the government. And some members questioned the authenticity of the letter sent from the President's Office.
And so the MP for Addu-Meedhoo constituency, Rozaina Adam said that the "alleged" letter from the President's Office does not have the official seal on it and must be taken to the police to authenticate it.
Vice President of the Party, Mohamed Sifaaz said that while the government has called for talks without set conditions, the government must show sincerity first. And so the political leaders serving prison sentences must be freed and the MPs who have criminal charges pending against them, should have the charges withdrawn before calling to the discussion table.
The government sent a letter to all political parties along with the former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, on 30 August 2017. The government appointed Fisheries Minister, Dr. Mohamed Shainee as the Chief Negotiator, requested the recipients to send a list, within seven days, of things they wish the government to correct.
But no political party has responded at the end of the seven-day period.
