Police have launched an investigation against South Galolhu MP Ahmed Mahloof for obstruction.
Speaking to press after his meeting with the police last Sunday night, Mahloof said he was under suspicion for creating disturbance and obstruction of law enforcement near Criminal Court on, August 24, the night Jumhoory Party leader Qasim Ibrahim was sentenced. He said he was also under investigation for additional offenses.
Meanwhile, Mahloof’s lawyer, Mahfooz Saeed says the police had no grounds to pursue the investigation as the court had ruled Mahloof was unlawfully detained on August 24, and ordered his release.
Mahfooz said Mahloof gave his statement to the police with that understanding.
“Since the procedure under which Mahloof was declared void, we do not believe there can be any investigation, trial or sentence that can be carried out regarding this case,” said Mahfooz.
Mahloof, along with another individual was arrested from the demonstration held by the opposition coalition near Maldives Monetary Authority after the court scheduled to sentence Qasim in absentia.
