Maseeh: Impeachment motion against Anil cannot be held until regulation amended

The no-confidence motion against Attorney General Mohamed Anil cannot be carried out until the People’s Majlis regulation is amended in line with the Supreme Court ruling, says Speaker of People’s Majlis, Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed.

At the end of this Thursday’s Majlis session, Maseeh stated that Supreme Court has ruled on July 13 that the President, Cabinet ministers, judges, and members of independent institutions can only be removed from their position through an impeachment.

He said that the no-confidence motion submitted against Anil can therefore only be carried out after the Majlis regulation is amended accordingly. He also said that one parliamentarians who signed the petition had signed it twice.

The no-confidence motion against Anil was first submitted on July 10. It was rejected as it gave reference to the wrong article of the Constitution. The petition was amended and re-submitted on August 10.
