Human Rights Ambassador Ahmed Ibrahim Didi (Sandhaan Ahanmaidhy) has said that the recent attacks on Police, as well as the murder of a Police officer in Kaashidhoo last night, are the results of Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) efforts to defame the Police.
Speaking to reporters today, Ahanmaidhy said that MDP has commenced a campaign on Raajje TV to defame the Police in the eyes of Maldivians.
“There is an ongoing campaign to convince people that the Police are creating problems. This is a public campaign on Raajje TV, there’s nothing secretive about it,” he said.
As an example, he described a video shown on Raajje TV which shows a Police officer allegedly stealing a bottle of petrol near a motorcycle.
“I don’t believe that the pictures shown on Raajje TV are responsible. Such information should not be spread by a TV channel registered in Maldives. Senior officials of MDP have, on Raajje TV, called on people to attack the Police,” Ahanmaidhy said.
He pointed out that while Raajje TV has violated the regulations of Broadcasting Commission, the Commission has not taken any action against the channel.
Referring to the video of a Police officer stealing petrol, Superintendent of Police Abdullah Navaz told reporters that false information is being spread by some media sources about the Police, and that such cases will be submitted to the relevant authorities.
Attempts to reach Raajje TV, MDP and Broadcasting Commission have not yet been successful.
